Pharmalys aims to strengthen its presence in Africa with delivering high-standard quality services by highly qualified personnel empowered and committed, and targets the best practices achieving results and improving performance in all facets of its business so as to increase the overall organizational performance, create value for its stakeholders, ensure a consistent business strategy and sustainable growth, to reach Business Excellence.

Business excellence philosophy

Pharmalys shall validate its Business Excellence philosophy through assessments using proven Business Excellence Models (BEMs), which are based on a set of fundamental concepts or values. The first BEMs were developed in the late-1980s as a result of the quality movement in the West, which was, in itself, a response to advances in quality and competitiveness in Japan. Gradually, the term Business Excellence superseded the terms Quality and Total Quality Management (TQM). The concepts and philosophy of business excellence are among the most effective ways for any organisation to improve its business performance and BEMs are used as a key mechanism to improve organisational performance and enhance national/international competitiveness.

BEMs are frameworks when applied within an organisation can help individuals to focus thoughts and actions in a more systematic and structured way that should lead to increased performance. The models are holistic in that they focus upon all areas of an organisation, and in particular, factors that drive performance. These models are internationally recognised as both providing a framework to assist the adoption of business excellence principles, and an effective way of measuring how thoroughly this adoption has been incorporated.

Business excellence models

Several business excellence models exist world-wide, the most common include the following:

  • The Malcolm Baldrige Model – Used in over 25 countries including US and NZ.
  • European Foundation of Quality Management (EFQM) Business Excellence Model (BEM) – Used throughout Europe.

With respect to our vision, mission and values, Pharmalys chooses to adopt the EFQM BEM which  consists of 5 process enablers and 4 results category as follows:

This model provides a systematic, structured, integrated, and highly sustainable approach to organisational improvement. It will help objectively determine the position of Pharmalys during its business excellence journey. The BEM criteria broadly channel and encourage the use of best practices into areas where their effect is most beneficial to performance.

Business Excellence at Pharmalys

Although the EFQM BEM has evolved to embrace a more global ecosystem philosophy (EFQM Model 2020), the size and stage of development of Pharmalys means that the original BEM fits our needs better.

Our organisation is to use the original model as a basis for its improvement culture and adopt a continuous improvement philosophy, get buy-in from its managers and assess overall performance for a comprehensive Business Excellence management system to identify specific strengths and areas for improvement. The introduction of improvement tools will support Pharmalys managers to define improvement objectives, processes, training, counselling, tracking progress, providing ongoing feedback, recognition and development for employees, such as listed below:

  • Vision, mission and values
  • Business strategic planning
  • Performance measurement
  • Human resources planning
  • Customer relationship and management
  • Policies and procedures

Pharmalys’ goals is to develop powerful action plans to address its strengths and its challenges and also focuses on the robust set up of a Business Excellence management system to track and communicate progress of assessments at regular intervals to staff, so as the new techniques implementation in the organisation can be smooth and effective.
