Clinical Trials Day: Pharmalys on Building Inclusive Clinical Trials in Africa and Beyond

May 19, 2025 | Non classé

Each year on 20 May, Clinical Trials Day marks the anniversary of James Lind’s pioneering scurvy trial in 1747. More than 275 years later, clinical trials remain one of the most powerful tools we have for improving health outcomes, generating evidence, and shaping the future of medicine.

Why Clinical Trials Matter

Clinical trials not only help bring new therapies to market – they also ensure these therapies are safe, effective, and relevant to diverse populations. Their value cannot be overstated, particularly in underrepresented regions where inclusion in global research remains limited. As more eyes turn towards equitable access and representation in science, the role of clinical trials in Africa has never been more important.

Pharmalys at TCIS Africa 2025

At Pharmalys, we continue to support a stronger, more inclusive clinical research ecosystem. Our recent participation in TCIS Africa 2025 – a key event convening clinical research professionals across the continent – highlighted both the progress being made and the critical work that lies ahead.

Our CEO, Marieme Ba, joined a panel discussion on The Future of Clinical Research in Africa, with a particular focus on the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI). The conversation offered a timely reflection on the potential of AI to transform the research landscape, from improving protocol design to enhancing trial efficiency, while also acknowledging the challenges of implementation, infrastructure, and regulatory readiness across the continent.

Investing in Africa’s Clinical Research Talent

Assane Ndiaye, Clinical Research Training & Development Team Lead at Pharmalys, moderated a panel discussion on Capacity Building in Clinical Research. The session explored actionable strategies to develop and retain African talent, invest in local training programmes, and foster sustainable growth through mentorship, infrastructure development, and collaborative networks. These conversations are part of a wider shift toward a more inclusive and locally-driven research environment – something we at Pharmalys are proud to contribute to. As we celebrate Clinical Trials Day, we honour the professionals who design, manage, and participate in these studies, and we recommit to building systems that enable meaningful participation and long-term impact in Africa and beyond.
