Exploring the Value of Implementation Research: Highlights from the CREDO Webinar

On 28 November, Pharmalys hosted an online webinar titled ‘Implementation Research: What is it about and what is its value?’ as part of the CREDO (Clinical Research Excellence and Development Opportunity) initiative. CREDO, for which Pharmalys serves as the institutional sponsor, continues to support knowledge sharing within the clinical research community. The event brought together 136 participants from various sectors of clinical research, public health, and academia to gain insights from renowned experts in implementation research. This webinar highlighted the importance of understanding how clinical research translates into effective, real-world solutions. Featuring three notable speakers, it offered an in-depth look at the challenges and opportunities in this domain, while providing actionable insights for participants.

The Guest Speakers

The event opened with a presentation by Professor Piero Olliaro, who explored key considerations for designing clinical trials. His discussion emphasised the complexities involved in tailoring trials to generate meaningful outcomes that can directly impact health systems and patient care. Following Professor Olliaro’s session, Professor Christian Burri delved into the broader implications of implementation research. He explained how this field extends beyond the confirmation of clinical trial results, underscoring its role in bridging the gap between research findings and their application in diverse healthcare settings. Rounding out the lineup was Professor Ghyslain Mombo-Ngoma, who shared valuable insights from his work at CERMEL (Centre de Recherches Médicales de Lambaréné) in Gabon. His talk focused on translating research outcomes into practical, real-world interventions, using examples from CERMEL’s impactful initiatives. Collaboration Fuels Success: Pharmalys Team Training 2024

In November 2024, the Pharmalys team came together for a three day training session in Dakar, Senegal, to prepare for an important study on neonatal sepsis. Reflecting the multinational scope of our team, colleagues travelled from across Africa and Europe, representing our offices in France, Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal. The training was structured to ensure all participants were well-prepared to execute a high-quality study. Neonatal sepsis remains a major health issue, particularly in low-resource settings where it contributes significantly to newborn mortality. The sessions covered study protocols, ethical considerations, and operational planning, equipping the team with the tools needed for efficient implementation. World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day: A Call to Action

Each year, January 30 marks World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day, a World Health Organisation (WHO) initiative that sheds light on the need to address these devastating yet preventable illnesses. Affecting an estimated 1 billion people, primarily in underserved communities, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) perpetuate cycles of poverty, disability, and stigma. NTDs, including diseases like leprosy, schistosomiasis, and lymphatic filariasis, disproportionately impact regions with limited access to healthcare and essential resources. Despite their prevalence, these diseases remain largely underfunded and overlooked in global health priorities. At Pharmalys, we stand with WHO and global stakeholders in the fight against NTDs. We believe that strengthening health systems, promoting access to research and treatment, and fostering collaborative partnerships are crucial steps toward eliminating these diseases and improving health equity.
